How the checker works
The checker finds the centre point of your postcode using postcodes.io (open Ordnance Survey and ONS data). It then checks which water company supply area that point falls inside, using the water company boundaries published by Ofwat and shared through the water industry's Stream open data platform. That gives the supplier for your area, including the small new appointees (NAVs) that serve some new developments.
Supply boundaries can run between neighbouring streets, and a postcode covers several addresses. So if you live close to a boundary, your bill is the final word. Sewerage areas aren't published in a form the checker can use, so the sewerage company is shown as likely wherever it can differ from your water supplier.

Each company profile covers its region, its AMP8 investment plans and the tenders and frameworks it's running.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out who supplies my water?
Enter your postcode in the checker above. It matches the location of your postcode against the official water company supply boundaries published by Ofwat. Your water bill will also name your supplier.
Is my water company the same as my sewerage company?
Not always. In England and Wales, ten regional companies provide both water and sewerage. In areas served by a water-only company, such as Affinity Water, SES Water, South East Water, Portsmouth Water, South Staffs Water or Bristol Water, sewerage is provided by a different regional company. Your bill shows both.
Can I choose or switch my water supplier?
Households in England and Wales can't switch their water supplier. Businesses, charities and public sector organisations in England (and in Scotland) can choose their water retailer, although the network itself is still run by the regional water company. How the business water retail market works →
What is a new appointee (NAV) water company?
Some new housing and commercial developments are served by a new appointee, also known as a NAV, such as Independent Water Networks or Icosa Water, instead of the regional company. If your postcode falls inside one of these areas, the checker shows it.
Is there a hosepipe ban in my area?
Look up your supplier above, then check the UK hosepipe ban tracker for its current status.
Who supplies water in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Scottish Water provides water and sewerage services across Scotland, and NI Water provides them across Northern Ireland.
