Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) — sometimes called smart metering — involves deploying water meters that automatically read and transmit consumption data. Unlike traditional manually-read meters, AMI devices send readings at frequent intervals (typically hourly or more), enabling water companies to detect leaks on customers' supply pipes, track consumption patterns, identify high users, and support time-of-use charging. Ofwat's leakage performance commitments in PR24 make smart metering effectively mandatory for all water companies at scale by 2030. The supply chain includes hardware manufacturers, cellular/LPWAN network operators, data management platforms, and specialist installation contractors.
