Three significant procurement opportunities are now open across the UK water sector, spanning sewer rehabilitation, strategic IT infrastructure and generator supply. Combined indicative value: approximately £283 million. Here is what contractors and suppliers need to know.
Water Industry Hub monitors procurement activity across every UK water company on a continuous basis. This week three contracts of material value are open simultaneously — an unusual concentration of live opportunity across the sector.
Thames Water's AMP8 sewer rehabilitation framework is the largest single water sector contract currently open in the UK market. It is structured across two lots — Lot 1 covering CCTV inspection and sewer cleaning, and Lot 2 covering structural repair works — allowing specialist contractors to bid for the lot relevant to their scope of work, or both.
Thames Water operates one of the largest sewerage networks in the UK, serving approximately 15 million customers across London, the Thames Valley and Home Counties. Under the AMP8 investment programme (2025–2030), the company has committed to a significant uplift in sewer condition assessment and structural intervention. This framework is the primary vehicle for that programme reaching the supply chain.
The split-lot structure is significant. Sewer cleaning and CCTV inspection are typically undertaken by specialist contractor groups distinct from those carrying out structural lining and repair. Bidding across both lots requires demonstrating capability in very different disciplines. Suppliers should assess carefully which lot — or both — their core service offering supports.
Key point for M&E and infrastructure contractors: At ~£228m over the AMP8 period, this framework represents one of the highest-value sewer rehabilitation procurement packages Thames Water has put to market. Early engagement with the specification requirements is advisable.
Portsmouth Water is procuring a strategic IT services framework for the AMP8 period covering four technology domains: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), cloud services, cyber security and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The framework closes on 4 August 2026.
At £48m, this is a significant technology procurement for a company of Portsmouth Water's size — reflecting the sector-wide increase in digital investment being driven through AMP8. Water companies across England and Wales are accelerating digitalisation programmes, and IT services frameworks of this type are becoming a standard part of AMP8 procurement strategies.
Suppliers active in utility-sector ERP implementation, OT/IT cyber security, cloud migration or GIS should note the 4 August deadline. Portsmouth Water is one of the smaller regulated water companies in England but its AMP8 digital investment ambition is proportionally significant.
NI Water is procuring a contract for the supply, maintenance and hire of generators across its network — a critical resilience and emergency response capability for a utility serving approximately 830,000 properties across Northern Ireland. The contract closes 31 July 2026.
Generator contracts of this type cover both planned asset provision and rapid-deployment emergency hire — essential for maintaining water and wastewater treatment operations during power interruptions. Suppliers in generator sales, rental and field maintenance should note the tight deadline: nine days from the date of this article.
NI Water sits outside Ofwat's regulatory framework and is sponsored by the Department for Infrastructure. Its procurement activity is often overlooked by GB-based contractors. Water Industry Hub published a full breakdown of NI Water's forward tender programme here.
